Aww, am I crazy for kinda missing the insanity of D3? Yesterday’s Purple Hearted Xinomavro took me down memory lane, of studying wine with my power palates and, in the words of @v_onthevine, “getting affected,” our mascot @pinotgrigio2 always cheering us on. I cannot stress enough the importance of having study groups when preparing for any of the @wsetglobal exams 🤓🥂💜In just one week, the syllabus crammed in Greece, Austria and Hungary! Sharing bottles and knowledge outside of class is essential. Plus we had a whole lot of fun…💜

Because what is time? We can still recap 2022, right? 😬 I was supposed to go to an end-of-the-year tasting with my NYC Wine Ladies and bring a bottle of a variety, region or producer that impressed me the most in 2022. But then I fell victim to holiday travel and its run-around, flight-delayed exhaustion, so I opted for health and unfortunately missed the moment.

The bottle I planned on bringing sulked at my maturity.

My 2022 revelation is three-fold:

1. Greek wine is girthy and gracious.
2. Xinomavro is up there with Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo in my life.
3. @tatsis_winery is a solid Greek wine producer.

The best part about @whiskyadvocate's Whiskey Fest

The best part about @whiskyadvocate's Whiskey Fest was the after, ending up at @lebainnyc for some IPA palate rinsing before dinner at @thestandardgrillnyc 😍

The Champagne was racy, a typical Blanc de Blancs, and the Cornas felt good in a suit of blue fruit with chocolate hems and black pepper buttons. The food was nothing to write home about, but the service was spectacular. Their penny-tiled floor makes me happy.

The last shot is of a @theglenturretwhisky 1987 that will sell for at least $10,000 a bottle…my privileged sip was smooth and sensuous, but I’ve yet to find a liquid that will convince me of such a frivolous value. Cheers!

I've silenced myself on social for quite some time now. I killed my algorithm in fear.

Privacy is protection.

And so I fled, but I didn’t stop living. Linear has never been my forte…hope it's not your net worth either.

Cheers from a recent moment among the Andes, a secret retreat to Chile. Oh that rich summer abundance…

Our main focus now? Fuerza a todos mis chilenos affected by the fires—the country currently ablaze. The government has favored fleeting riches over a culture capable of abundance and pride.

Too much good. Too much good... 💜🍷⚡️🤘🏻From coast to coast, a whirlwind of too much good times and great wines. What @henriquez_rober has achieved in these few past years is an inspiration. From a few plastic bins in the backyard to rightfully earning the admiration of respected peers… Again, an inspiration.

The work would be insurmountable to most, but the spirit of Nahuelbuta runs deep through soul of my dear friend Roberto. The expression he harvests from Chile's deepest roots has brought people to tears. I've witnessed it, having felt a gush of awe pressing behind the eyes myself. Alongside a partner like my dear @chaltumay, the sky is the limit! And my glass is here, ready to taste while they make it RAIN! 🫶

Our first meeting post D4, no blinds, all fun. We had studied hard for months so we celebrated accordingly. The spit glass was our stomach.

The evening started with a pink Port, moved on to a white Pinot Noir and then to a naturally blue Verdejo/Chardonnay blend, an “original wine from the Mediterranean area.” The short of it: pigmentation extracted from Nebbiolo skins that was introduced to the aged Verdejo before blending with Chardonnay. Not my cup of wine, but our waiter made an excellent point that it could make a fun blue sangria.

Then we got serious. The @paoloconterno 2016 Barolo quickly received a Purple Heart upon tasting. The finish pulsates with concentration, an integration that demands contemplation. It was beautiful.

The D4 Sparkling Wine exam was a doozy. I had expected to be more uneasy about the theory than the blind tasting, but au contraire. Theory might just be what pushes me through. A traditional method Argentine sparkling, really? A closed-up Trentodoc? At least I nailed the Sekt…
