Coming to Your Senses

wet leaves

Purple Mouthed began as a desire to pair wine with real life.

Behold its culmination: a weekly bottling of 15 years coming to my senses.

It’s official: I’ve joined the Substack train to gain the last of us internet readers.

Welcome to my new weekly column, Coming to Your Senses, a type of “tech sheet” featuring the terroir of my brain.

Objectively, taste is subjective, but I do indeed make a living from it, so I hope you’ll keep following along to learn about wine with a fresh, real-life context.

The first issue is out now!
In a soil pit under Merlot at Cono Sur’s Las Hijuelas Estate in the Colchagua Valley, Chile. The vineyard is known for its white soils with a high concentration of volcanic ash and decomposed gravel.

In this week’s harvest:

  • Smell: wet leaves, and why the best Pinot Noir smells like a fall walk
  • Hear: Philip Glass + Champagne
  • Taste: an upstate Ambrosia apple, and the Pinot Meunier it brought to mind
  • See: the scaries, and why points and medals shouldn’t choose your wine
  • Touch: black velvet, from Pomerol to the world’s oldest vine in Slovenia

And a sixth sense to close, which you’ll have to read to discover.
