Purple Mouthed is the website of Kendal Montgomery, a journalist and creative strategist based in Brooklyn, New York. This page explains what personal information this site collects, why, and what you can ask me to do with it.
The short pour: I only collect what you choose to send me. I use it to reply to you and to send what you signed up for, and I never sell it.
What I collect
- When you contact me: your name, email, company, the kind of help you’re looking for, and your message. These are emailed to me and saved in my website’s admin area so I can reply and keep track of our conversation.
- When you sign up for my newsletter: your name and email. I add them to my newsletter list on Substack, which sends the newsletter.
- When you leave a comment: your name, email, and comment. Your name and comment are published with the story. Your email is never published. WordPress also records the IP address and browser details of each commenter to help detect spam.
- When you email me directly: whatever you include in your email.
- When you visit: like most websites, my web host keeps standard server logs, which record IP addresses and browser details for security and troubleshooting.
I don’t use analytics or advertising trackers, and I don’t run ads.
Services that help run this site
- My web host stores the site, including form submissions.
- Akismet (by Automattic) checks comments for spam. Your comment, name, email, IP address, and browser details are sent to Akismet for that check.
- Google reCAPTCHA protects this site from spam and abuse. It collects information about your device and how you use the page. Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.
- YouTube videos are embedded in some stories. YouTube (owned by Google) may set cookies and collect data when a page with a video loads or when you play it.
- Substack sends my newsletter. Once you’re on the list, Substack’s privacy policy also applies.
Links to Instagram, YouTube, and other sites are governed by those sites’ own policies.
Cookies
Purple Mouthed doesn’t set its own cookies for visitors. Google reCAPTCHA and embedded YouTube videos may set theirs. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the site will still work.
How I use your information
I use it to reply to your messages and work with you, to send the newsletter you asked for, to publish your comments, and to keep the site free of spam. I never sell, rent, or trade your information, and I don’t use it for advertising.
If you’re in the EU or UK: I rely on your consent for the newsletter, on your request (and my legitimate interest in replying) for messages, and on my legitimate interest for publishing comments and protecting the site from spam.
How long I keep it
- Messages: as long as we’re in conversation or working together, and for a reasonable time after that for my business records.
- Newsletter sign-ups: until you unsubscribe.
- Comments: as long as the story is published, unless you ask me to remove yours.
Your choices and rights
You can ask to see, correct, or delete the information I hold about you, or ask me to stop using it. Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link. For anything else, email kendal@purplemouthed.com, and I’ll respond within 30 days. If you’re in the EU or UK, you also have the right to object to or restrict how I use your information, to receive a copy of it, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
Where it’s stored
This site and the services above may store information in the United States and in other countries where they operate. If you’re outside the US, your information will be transferred there.
Age
This site is about wine and is meant for adults of legal drinking age. I don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Changes
If I update this policy, I’ll post the new version here and change the date at the top.
